If you are moving to Omaha or thinking about switching neighborhoods, one of the biggest things to consider is your commute.

The good news is Omaha is a really easy city to get around. But where you live still makes a big difference in how your day to day life feels.

In this guide, I am breaking down the best Omaha neighborhoods for short commutes, plus how to think about commute times based on your lifestyle 🚗🏡

Where People Commute in Omaha

Most buyers I work with are commuting to:

  • Downtown Omaha

  • Midtown and UNMC

  • Aksarben Village and UNO

  • West Dodge corridor

  • Offutt Air Force Base

So choosing a neighborhood that keeps you close to these areas can make a big difference.

Best Neighborhoods for Short Commutes

Dundee

Central, charming, and about 10 minutes to downtown. Also very close to UNMC.

Aksarben and Elmwood Park

Walkable, convenient, and easy access to I-80. Great for commuting in multiple directions.

Field Club

Super central and often overlooked. Quick drive to downtown, Blackstone, and Midtown.

Fairacres and West Fairacres

Close to Dodge and I-680, which makes getting anywhere in the city simple.

Near Heartwood Preserve

Great option for newer homes with access to West Dodge and the 144th corridor.

Country Club and Morton Meadows

Popular with UNMC buyers. Central and easy to navigate.

Hanscom Park, Little Italy, and Gifford Park

All close to downtown with quick access to major roads and local spots.

Why Highways Matter

Living near I-80 or I-680 can save you a lot of time.

They make it easier to move across the city quickly, even if you live a little farther out.

It Is Not Just About Work

A short commute also means easier access to everyday life.

Think about getting to the Zoo, RiverFront, shopping, restaurants, and parks without a long drive 🛍️

Areas With Longer Commutes

These neighborhoods are great, just farther from central Omaha:

  • Gretna

  • Far west Millard

  • Bennington

  • Elkhorn

If you work downtown or midtown, expect a longer drive.

Final Thoughts

Omaha makes it pretty easy to keep your commute short if you pick the right location.
